Good Energy launches new time of use tariff for electric vehicle drivers

15.07.2021

New smart tariff will reduce the cost of charging

Good Energy, the 100% renewable energy supplier, is today launching a new time of use tariff designed to support electric vehicle drivers.

The tariff, called Green Driver, offers customers two overnight off-peak periods to charge their EV at a cheaper rate and will be enabled by smart meters.

The two options provide a 5-hour or 7-hour window for optimal charging starting at midnight. EV drivers can plug in before going to bed and wake up with a charged car to fit around their lifestyle. They can also use this period to use any other domestic appliance at lower the cost.

The tariff was designed following an extensive trial of 100 participants over a three-month period earlier this year. The trial surpassed expectations with many more people shifting their energy consumption to take advantage of the lower cost of electricity.

The trial found that 98% of customers used their off-peak periods to charge their EVs. Customers also took the opportunity to use the dishwasher and washing machine during the off-peak period.

The growth of EVs offers great potential for changing energy habits. In the UK, peak times for using electricity are between 4pm and 8pm. Millions more electric vehicles charging during this period could place significant pressure on the grid. This time of use tariff offers a solution by evening out the peaks and supporting National Grid balance supply and demand.

Green Driver will be Good Energy’s cheapest electric vehicle tariff to date. 90% of customers surveyed said the off-peak rates were competitive and 38% thought the peak rates were as competitive. 88% of customers also claimed the time of use tariff was cheaper than their previous tariff. The tariff will also be backed by genuinely green energy sourced from Good Energy’s community of 1,600 independent renewable generators.

Nigel Pocklington, Good Energy’s CEO, said: “This green EV tariff is smart, good value, and works around people’s hectic schedules. Many new electric vehicle drivers want to charge at home but are afraid it will cost them the earth. Our new EV tariff does the opposite by offering people cheaper rates backed by genuinely green power.

“We need to simplify the experience of EV charging and show people it’s both the right thing to do and easy as pie.”
